#Iambeautiful: African Hair project

Updated: Sep 18, 2019

Where has the year gone?? We can’t believe it’s June already!!

So this month our Headwrap adventures took us to Shepparton,Victoria to take part in a photography exhibition project by MAV (Multicultural Arts Victoria) called #iambeautiful - a celebration of African Hair and it’s significance on beauty standards.

Natural Hair appreciation had been, and continues to be, a struggle for people of colour. And we believe a lot of it has been due to lack of representation and knowledge.

But boy aren’t the tides turning!

We are seeing more and more people showing up natural in all it glorious forms. There are hundreds of ‘How-to’ You tube tutorials, to guide you from whatever stage you are to where you aspire to be.

What was beautiful to see in the Shepp project (notice the term of familiar endearment there? we were made to feel so welcome, we’d be back there in a heartbeat) was the the guys also took part and gave their unique views on hair. A perspective we don’t hear often but very refreshing.

In addition, the participants in the project were quite young and quite woke! The common thread that ran through the art installation was “#iambeautiful because I am different, not inspite of it, and I embrace that”. When we accept who we are and love ourselves unapologetically, we give others permission to be themselves!

We were privy to some heartfelt sharing on what this project has meant to people and with tears in our eyes,it really brought home why we do this.
